Armistice Day and Kurt Vonnegut’s Birthday

armistrice

“…all the people of all the nations which had fought in the First World War were silent during the eleventh minute of the eleventh hour of Armistice Day, which was the eleventh day of the eleventh month.

It was during that minute in nineteen hundred and eighteen, that millions upon millions of human beings stopped butchering one another. I have talked to old men who were on battlefields during that minute. They have told me in one way or another that the sudden silence was the Voice of God. So we still have among us some men who can remember when God spoke clearly to mankind.

Armistice Day has become Veterans Day. Armistice Day was sacred. Veterans Day is not. So I will throw Veterans Day over my shoulder. Armistice Day I will keep. I don’t want to throw away any sacred things.
What else is sacred? Oh, Romeo and Juliet, for instance.
And all music is.”

Kurt Vonnegut

I mean no offense to those who support Veterans Day. It is simply a different holiday, meant to honor US soldiers in general. I believe that there is room in our cluttered calendar for both observances. While soldiers deserve our respect and empathy, of course, Veterans Day has usurped a holiday with far deeper and more historically specific meaning. Armistice Day was meant to commemorate possibly the gravest moment of recorded human history. I’m partial to the profoundly spiritual nature behind this original intent, as Mr. Vonnegut so eloquently spelled out 41 years ago.

Happy birthday, Kurt. I wish everyone a peaceful Armistice Day, and a moment of silence at 11:11.

Vote Today: November 4, 2014

For US based readers and listeners: I just thought I’d drop a friendly reminder that, however fucked our so-called democracy has become, voting still matters. It’s not only important to voice your opinion where it counts (as opposed to the internet); it’s important to exercise your primary duty as an informed citizen. One reason so many asshole Republicans get into office is that my generation lets old, cynical, fearful people dominate the polls. That is something that could change.

Since this is a music blog, I’m also sharing a song that I’ve probably listened to 40+ times this year.

Sandwell District’s Feed Forward collection is probably the best and dark techno release of the past decade. I can, and have, felt lost in this music for days at a time. Keep this playing as you brave your local polling station.

Oneohtrix Point Never + Philip K. Dick

Today I’m taking shelter in my apartment while a certain Christian music festival rears its ugly head across the street. Fanny-packed crowds flood the streets below while devotional rock blasts through the windows. I shut the shades and find my Rifts box set, selecting the third and possibly gentlest Oneohtrix Point Never album, Russian Mind.

Interesting Blogs / Blue Crystal Fire

My list of connected blogs should change more frequently, and now is a great time to start.  There are a couple I have in mind, music blogs with vast knowledge and interesting subjects.  I need more.  Not only to spread the word here, but for my own benefit.  I find it easy to slide into routines and some fresh perspective is a necessary punctuation.  So:

What are your favorite music blogs?

Any type: essays, reviews, videos, original material, file sharing, etc.

Please leave a comment and then listen to this absolute stunner from Robbie Basho, Blue Crystal Fire.

This song resides at the center of Visions Of The Country (1978), the only Basho album I have.  Having discovered his music this month I’m not experienced enough to convey much more than the notion that this is an essential listen for fans of guitar music and/or incredible voices.  It is.  I literally cried during my first listen.

Great cover artwork, too!

Thank you for the replies!!

I still feel like I’m hustling, and like I have no great talent. I’m not a great singer. But as long as I can keep the hustle going, and nobody taps me on the shoulder and says, “You’re busted,” then I can keep doing it.

– Jason Pierce

This, in all things. Thank you for the inspiration, Spaceman.

Seriously

I haven’t posted on here in ages and I feel terrible about this.

I’ve been busy, sure, but that’s no excuse; there is always something going on and I’ve made time in the past.  I woke up today with the resolve to change this.  I woke up with the notion of not only resuming writing about albums I want to share with the world, but changing the way I share on here.

So you’ll be seeing a few new things in the upcoming days and weeks.  You’ll be seeing a barrage of some of my favorite music discoveries this year along with new avenues of expressing myself and casting a light on worthy topics.

You’ll also see some HARD CORE NUDITY.

Okay, probably not.  Optimistic Underground has always been SFW and I imagine it should stay that way.  So, if you’re still here:  thank you for reading, thank you for your patience, and thank you in advance for coming back soon.

The Death of Cool

(or:  I Was Dared!)

Relevancy is ephemeral, hip is an illusion, and trends accompany diminishing returns.  Just saying.

I listen to music that I like, and write about the stuff I really enjoy.  You should too.  There is no shame in this.  Think about something you love.  Be thankful for it, whatever it is.

Why do you like what you like?  Why do you say what you say?  Let us know.

Thank you for reading.
